WEIGHT & DEVELOPMENT

Put health before a number

Body-weight concerns need qualified guidance. A cookbook cannot set a healthy weight or prescribe a weight-change plan.

Feed development and training

Young athletes need food for growth as well as sport. For adults, performance and recovery still require adequate intake. Do not use the nutrition estimates here as a daily limit.

Keep unsafe methods out

Do not restrict fluids or use rapid weight-cutting methods. Skipping food to change a scale reading can undermine health and training. Supplements are not a substitute for a sound food plan.

Bring the right people in

High-school athletes: involve a parent or guardian and appropriate school or medical support. College athletes: contact the athletic trainer, sports dietitian or team physician. Coaches can help athletes reach those professionals.

Notice the pattern

Repeated dizziness, fainting, large weight swings, declining practice quality or distress around food deserve prompt attention. Discuss concerns privately and respectfully. Get emergency help for collapse or confusion.

This cookbook supports meal planning for training and competition. It is not a substitute for professional medical or nutrition advice. Discuss health concerns, dietary restrictions and weight changes with a qualified health-care professional. Younger athletes should involve a parent or guardian.
